How to Find and Fix Weak Topics

Weak-topic analysis is useful only if it identifies a skill narrow enough to fix.

A practical method you can use today

Sort misses by chapter and reason. For the worst repeat pattern, revisit one explanation, solve a few examples and retest on unseen questions. Reassess after several sessions rather than after one lucky correct answer.

Before beginning, select a measurable goal: for example, reduce incorrect answers in one clearly named concept, explain a passage more accurately, or complete a comparable timed set without sacrificing correctness. Write the goal down and review it after practice. This makes your next session more focused than choosing a random activity simply because it is available.

Example: put the method into practice

“Bad at physics” is not actionable; “confusing series and parallel resistance when calculating equivalent resistance” gives a concrete repair target.

Try the approach without looking at an existing answer, then change one important condition or use a different question from the same concept. If the method stops working, locate the missing assumption and study that idea before repeating more questions. A useful explanation tells you why an answer follows, not merely which option was selected.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not rank weaknesses solely by raw incorrect counts when you attempted very different numbers of questions per topic.

Another trap is treating every incorrect response as the same type of error. A forgotten fact needs active recall; a flawed method needs a worked explanation; a rushed misread needs a deliberate checking routine. Choose the remedy that matches the underlying cause and record uncertain guesses even when the chosen option happens to be correct.

What to check after your next session

Compare error rate, repeat frequency and time spent to select the next priority.

Start with a manageable set, review it thoroughly and return to the concept after a delay. When accuracy on genuinely new material improves, progress to a wider mix of questions or greater time pressure. If it does not, revisit the prerequisite skill rather than simply attempting more of the same problems.
