How to Use an Error Log to Improve Exam Scores

An error log turns a wrong answer into an actionable next step instead of a forgotten score.

A practical method you can use today

For each error, record exam, chapter, reason, corrected principle and a revisit date. Use categories such as concept, arithmetic, interpretation and timing. Review repeat categories weekly.

Before beginning, select a measurable goal: for example, reduce incorrect answers in one clearly named concept, explain a passage more accurately, or complete a comparable timed set without sacrificing correctness. Write the goal down and review it after practice. This makes your next session more focused than choosing a random activity simply because it is available.

Example: put the method into practice

An incorrect 20% increase from 50 to 60 should be logged as a base-value misunderstanding if you divided by 60 rather than 50, not simply “percentage mistake.”

Try the approach without looking at an existing answer, then change one important condition or use a different question from the same concept. If the method stops working, locate the missing assumption and study that idea before repeating more questions. A useful explanation tells you why an answer follows, not merely which option was selected.

Mistakes to avoid

Avoid copying full explanations into a notebook without identifying the decision that went wrong. That creates pages of notes but little diagnosis.

Another trap is treating every incorrect response as the same type of error. A forgotten fact needs active recall; a flawed method needs a worked explanation; a rushed misread needs a deliberate checking routine. Choose the remedy that matches the underlying cause and record uncertain guesses even when the chosen option happens to be correct.

What to check after your next session

Retest the concept on a different question after a delay. Close the log entry only after new evidence of improvement.

Start with a manageable set, review it thoroughly and return to the concept after a delay. When accuracy on genuinely new material improves, progress to a wider mix of questions or greater time pressure. If it does not, revisit the prerequisite skill rather than simply attempting more of the same problems.
