CLAT Reading Practice: Build Comprehension Under Time

CLAT reading practice rewards careful comprehension, argument tracking and evidence-based inference under time pressure.

A practical method you can use today

After each paragraph, write a five-word summary. Identify the author’s claim, any counterargument and the role of examples. Answer without rereading the entire passage first, then verify your chosen evidence.

Before beginning, select a measurable goal: for example, reduce incorrect answers in one clearly named concept, explain a passage more accurately, or complete a comparable timed set without sacrificing correctness. Write the goal down and review it after practice. This makes your next session more focused than choosing a random activity simply because it is available.

Example: put the method into practice

If the author calls a policy “promising but untested,” the tone is cautiously positive, not unqualified enthusiasm. Train yourself to notice qualifiers such as may, rarely and however.

Try the approach without looking at an existing answer, then change one important condition or use a different question from the same concept. If the method stops working, locate the missing assumption and study that idea before repeating more questions. A useful explanation tells you why an answer follows, not merely which option was selected.

Mistakes to avoid

Reading faster is unhelpful if you overlook a reversal introduced by although or nevertheless. Start by understanding structure, then shorten your per-passage budget.

Another trap is treating every incorrect response as the same type of error. A forgotten fact needs active recall; a flawed method needs a worked explanation; a rushed misread needs a deliberate checking routine. Choose the remedy that matches the underlying cause and record uncertain guesses even when the chosen option happens to be correct.

What to check after your next session

Review mistakes by question type: main idea, inference, tone, vocabulary in context and supporting detail.

Start with a manageable set, review it thoroughly and return to the concept after a delay. When accuracy on genuinely new material improves, progress to a wider mix of questions or greater time pressure. If it does not, revisit the prerequisite skill rather than simply attempting more of the same problems.
